Reading Cultural Contexts HTE650 / B

Instructor: Jamie Pitts, PhD

The situation of the church in particular times and places, or contexts, informs how the church understands and witnesses to the gospel. Understanding the church’s contexts is therefore a primary task of Christian ministry. This course introduces students to theological and theoretical accounts of “context,” paying special attention to the concept of “culture” and its symbolic and material dimensions. Students will be led in a process of cultural analysis oriented to the church’s witness.
