Sexuality, Colonialism and Queer Theology HTE663E

Instructor: Kim Penner, PhD

This course introduces queer theology as a critical resource for Christian discipleship and witness. After a broad overview of the field, including attention to developments in Anabaptist queer theology, we will focus on Marcella Althaus-Reid’s argument that anti-queer theology and politics were at the heart of the construction of the modern world during the colonial period. For Althaus-Reid, queering theology involves a simultaneous attack on its heterosexist and colonial formations. These insights lead us to an historical study of colonial theology and sexual politics. With this background in queer theology and history, we will consider implications for the future of global relations among Mennonites.
