Werner K. Fransen and Mary Irene Liechty Smucker Next Generation Scholarship
The Next Generation Scholarship was created to support and encourage outstanding Mennonite students with gifts in church leadership.
- Recipients: Awarded annually to a student beginning their first year of study in the Master of Divinity Campus program; recipients must live in campus housing to receive the $4,000 stipend for living expenses
- Amount: Full tuition and $4,000 for living expenses
- Application deadline: Priority will be given to applications received by March 15

- Note: Partial-tuition scholarships of varying amounts may be awarded each year to students who applied for a Next Generation Scholarship and met eligibility requirements but were not selected. The recipients may receive this grant for two or three years by meeting certain conditions.
Criteria for award recipients
- Recipients must be full-time students living on campus, with their permanent residence in the U.S. or Canada. They must be active participants in a congregation that is affiliated with Mennonite World Conference; preference is given to those who are affiliated with Mennonite Church USA or Mennonite Church Canada.
- The decision to award a grant will be based on four factors:
- Previous academic performance, including a minimum GPA of 3.00 from all undergraduate work, based on information gained from transcripts and references
- Leadership potential and demonstrated skills, based on information gained from references
- Theological discernment, based on an essay written by the applicant on the subject of 鈥淭he Church鈥 (1,200 to 1,800 words)
- Personal character, based on information gained from references
Procedures
Applicants must submit the following for the coming academic year:
- A completed Admissions Application with all supporting materials, including transcript(s) and references
- Completed and applications
- A 1,200-1,800-word essay on the subject of 鈥淭he Church鈥
Candidates for the Next Generation Scholarship may be interviewed.
bg真人 will select the recipient(s) of this award and inform the student(s) via e-mail. The recipients must accept their award in writing to confirm enrollment for Semester One.
Understandings
- Recipients will be enrolled as full-time students. (Full-time is defined as taking nine credit hours or more per semester plus one Intensive Term course.)
- Recipients are eligible to receive the award for three years. To finish the MDiv Campus program in the allotted time frame, students must complete 27鈥30 credit hours per year, which generally consists of 12 credit hours per semester plus one or two Intensive Term courses.
- Recipients’ eligibility from year to year will be based on satisfactory progress toward completion of their degree, including:
- maintaining a minimum 3.00 GPA
- continuing as a full-time student
- supporting and adhering to bg真人 community life standards
- supporting and participating in enrollment and recruitment activities and initiatives, as requested by the bg真人 Admissions Team
- actively participating in campus activities
- assuming leadership responsibilities on the bg真人 campus
- living in bg真人 campus housing (to receive the $4,000 annual stipend for living expenses)
- Recipients will not be eligible to receive other bg真人 scholarships.
- Scholarships and financial aid given by bg真人 will not exceed 100 percent of tuition.
